Tommy is a gift giver.
He is very generous by nature and loves to make people happy with little surprises.
But the man can’t keep a secret – he gets too excited about the gift he has to give and ends up giving so many hints you can’t help but guess correctly, or he just tells you straight out.
Usually.
But this year, he out did himself.
Apparently he has been planning our Anniversary weekend since June, when he booked a room for us at The Chateaux in Deer Valley. He talked to my mom about babysitting the kids, and had everything planned down to the detail…
and then life happened.
The baby didn’t wean as early as we had hoped, so he couldn’t be left for a few days; and Grandma got sick anyway, and wasn’t available to babysit. And it was my Sunday to teach in Relief Society.
So after holding the secret in for three whole months he had to spill the beans so we could figure out what to do.
The kids ended up coming with us.
So, it wasn’t the romantic weekend he had originally envisioned, but it was still lots of fun.
The kids and I picked Tommy up from work on Friday, and after a quick stop for our customary slushee, we headed up the canyon.
The hotel, The Chateaux, was beautiful!
We had two queen sized beds with fluffy, feather-filled blankets and pillows; there was a fireplace in the room, as well as a big screen t.v.; the bathroom had a jetted tub; and the there was a kitchenette with microwave, mini fridge and plates, silverware, etc.
There was an outdoor, heated pool and hot tubs, but it didn’t occur to me to pack swimwear in mid-October.
Our first night, we drove into park city and got some yummy Asian food at Full House Asian Bistro.
When we got back to the hotel we hopped into our jammies and enjoyed our comfy beds, fireplace and t.v.
The next morning, after eating some savory left-overs for breakfast, we visited the Olympic Park and watched some Olympic hopefuls practice their sport.
Later, we tried to go to the Alpine Slides. I had called to make sure the slides were still open for the season and was told they were.
So, despite the crazy long line, we decided to brave the crowds and cold to let Josie take a ride with her Daddy.
Sadly (annoyingly) when we finally made it to the ticket window, we were told there were rocks on the slide and it could take up to two hours to clear the track.
Josie was super disappointed, but her sorrows were swallowed up in a chocolate and rainbow sprinkled marshmallow.
Tre enjoyed some gummy bears.
Then we hopped on the bus to head into downtown Park City for some lunch.
Then we returned to the hotel to enjoy the amenities.
After a little shopping and lunch the following day, we headed home.
Long story short:
Worst. Double. Date. Ever.
Cute kids, but really? A romantic anniversary weekend with the kids?
Blah.
Luckily, the hotel offered a free night for another paid night, so we’re going back next month,
sans children,
to make up for lost opportunities.
Thanks, Tommy, for the perfectly planned weekend.
I couldn’t have asked for a better surprise:)
